About the Nominee: This is the second year Ms. Phillips has been nominated for the LifeChanger of the Year Program. She was previously nominated in 2014-15.
Nicole Phillips is a phenomenal special education teacher. In her ten years of teaching, she has received many grants that were used to enhance the special education program at her school. Most recently, she received a grant that was used to remodel the special education classroom for her students. She supervises several mentorship programs such as Best Buddies and a kitchen training program where peer tutors mentor and train her students. Ms. Phillips spent every day of her summer vacation working diligently to remodel her outdated classroom. She also does fundraising on a weekly basis to bring her students on enriching field trips each month.
Ms. Phillips understands that every student has a different learning style; therefore she adapts her student’s lessons in creative ways to highlight the learning strengths of each individual and emphasizes life skills that will enhance their lives. No matter what level her students are on, she finds a way to include every student in the learning process, which may involve teaching the same material in four or five different ways. Ms. Phillips has a calm nature that creates a positive and peaceful environment for her students where they can thrive and learn.
