Position: First Grade Teacher School: Sand Hill Elementary School
School District: Carroll County School District
City, State: Carrollton, Georgia
About the Nominee: Laurie Mayben was nominated by a colleague, Tracy Eaves.
Laurie Mayben is more than a teacher. She is a cheerleader, caregiver, Relay for Life organizer, after-school care director, warrior and role model.
A few years ago, Ms. Mayben was working on her Doctorate when one of her first grade students was diagnosed with brain cancer. She would visit his family at their home to bring them food, encouragement and love. She went to his ball games, spent time at church with his family and rallied the entire school to raise money for them as they traveled to Atlanta for treatments.
Not only does Ms. Mayben teach little children, but she goes above and beyond by tapping into her faith to help their families. When the aforementioned student passed away early in the year in second grade, Ms. Mayben organized a candle light vigil at her school, as well as a fundraiser and "Yellow Socks" rally. She also worked with his family, her school administrator and others to dedicate a walking track in his honor. This is just an example of the lengths she goes to for one of her students. She is an inspiration and always has a hug and a smile for her students and others. Ms. Eaves says that it's an honor to celebrate her friend and co-worker as a LifeChanger!
