Alicia Diez-McNicholas

Position: Seventh/Eighth Grade Regular and Bilingual Science Teacher

School: North Middle School

School District: Brentwood Union Free School District

City, State: Brentwood, New York

About the Nominee: Alicia Diez-McNicholas was nominated by a colleague, Christian Losee. Alicia Diez-McNicholas has accomplished a lot at North Middle School! She has organized a daily schedule where her ESL students read the Pledge of Allegiance to their classmates every morning. Mrs. Diez-McNicholas also volunteers to run the school newsletter, which publishes four, unique copies per year featuring student art and literature. She selflessly purchases items for the school - for example, she personally purchased 30 flags for NMS' multi-cultural community event and regularly buys lunches and school supplies for disadvantaged students.

Mrs. Diez-McNicholas assisted with organizing the eighth grade end-of-the-year picnic, which serves 350 students. She reaches out to help the community, which is important in a Title 1 building where 90% of the students are minorities and 75% of the parents do not speak English as their first language. Students love her and spend their free periods with her, and parents come to the school to meet with her. She even assists the main office, serving as a translator, and acts as a community liaison when the school hosts outreach events. Mrs. Diez-McNicholas is a shining star who sets the standard for highly-effective teaching!
